About us
Ark is building the world’s highest-fidelity bioprocess simulation software to help life-saving therapies reach patients faster. By democratizing complex AI x multi-physics models in an intuitive software interface, we are transforming how bioprocess scientists work.
With Ark, scientists can replace weeks-long, costly ($10K–$1M+) experiments with simulations that run in seconds. This enables researchers to explore thousands more scenarios, accelerate time to market, and ensure more medical breakthroughs make it from the lab to the world. We’re ushering in a new era of digital bioprocessing.
About the role
As a Downstream Bioprocess Modeler, you will develop the models that make models for simulating purification and separation - chromatography, filtration, and the rest of the downstream train. You will be responsible for new model development from ideation through validation and have the opportunity to work on hard, high-impact problems at the intersection of science and modeling. You will work with a team of innovative PhD modelers and practitioners as well as software engineers who will translate your models into easy-to-use software.
This is an opportunity to join an ambitious team building a product that matters. At Ark, you'll have the chance to build foundational technology that will make the world better. We move fast, we have a high bar for excellence, and we ship the best.
Key Responsibilities
- Own new downstream model development from ideation through validation, including surveying relevant literature, deciding on modeling directions, validating against experimental data, and writing clean, performant scientific software code.
- Develop and deploy robust mechanistic models of chromatography (e.g., general rate, lumped kinetic, and transport-dispersive models; multi-component adsorption isotherms; ion-exchange, HIC, affinity, and mixed-mode) and other downstream unit operations such as filtration, UF/DF.
- Build hybrid and ML-augmented models that combine first-principles transport and thermodynamics with data-driven components to improve predictivity, speed, and generalization.
- Tackle problems in numerical simulation of dynamical systems, parameter estimation, uncertainty quantification, process optimization/control, and connecting downstream performance to critical quality attributes (CQAs).
About you
- Ph.D. in chemical engineering, separations science, applied mathematics, or other relevant fields
- 0–5 years of work experience
- Experience developing downstream models
- Expertise solving complex partial differential equations, differential-algebraic (DAE) systems, or coupled transport–reaction problems
- Proficiency in Python or a similar scientific programming language
- Experience with hybrid modeling and machine learning a plus
- Familiarity with numerical optimization and nonlinear programming solvers a plus
- Team player who is willing to work on multiple parts of the codebase and give constructive feedback for product, UI/UX, and customer workflows
Position
- Cambridge, MA (blocks from Harvard Square)
- Benefits include health, dental, and vision coverage, holiday and vacation time, 401k matching, and stock options
